Plantation Teak

Plantation Teak is a premium hardwood celebrated for its exceptional durability, timeless beauty, and natural resistance to the elements — making it an outstanding choice for outdoor furniture. With proper care and maintenance, your teak pieces will remain elegant and functional for many years.

Characteristics of Plantation Teak

Aesthetic Appeal:
Plantation teak is prized for its smooth, consistent grain and warm golden tone. Over time, it naturally weathers to a beautiful silver-grey patina that enhances its character and charm.

Natural Checking:
As teak responds to environmental changes, small surface cracks — known as checking — may appear. This is a normal part of teak’s natural aging process, does not affect its structural integrity, and is not considered a defect or warranty issue.

Cleaning

Steps:

  1. Dilute Simple Green cleaner in water according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  2. Using a soft, non-abrasive scrub pad, gently clean the surface, always following the direction of the wood grain.

  3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all residue.

  4. Allow the furniture to air dry completely before use.

Tip: Avoid harsh cleaners or pressure washing, as these can damage the wood’s surface.

Sealing

Purpose:
To maintain teak’s original golden tone and protect it from moisture and UV exposure, regular sealing is recommended.

Steps:

  1. Apply Semco Sealant (clear tone) soon after purchase.

  2. Reapply every 6–12 months, depending on sun and weather exposure, to preserve the finish.

  3. Semco Sealant can be purchased from any reputable marine supply store.

Weathering

Over time, unsealed teak will naturally weather to a soft, silver-grey colour. This graceful aging process does not compromise durability and is often preferred for its relaxed, coastal aesthetic.
If you enjoy this natural patina, minimal maintenance is required beyond occasional cleaning.

Storage and Protection

Recommendations:

  • During harsh weather or long periods of non-use, protect your teak with a quality furniture cover or store it indoors.

  • Always ensure the storage area is dry and well-ventilated to prevent moisture buildup and mildew.

  • Avoid storing directly on damp surfaces.

Long-Term Care

By following these simple care and maintenance steps, your plantation teak furniture will retain its strength, comfort, and natural beauty — becoming a lasting feature of your outdoor living space.
