Toby’s Backyard Just Got A Real Outdoor Room

Some patios are fine for a quick BBQ. Toby wanted more than that. He pictured a lounge you could walk into from the living room, sit down, and stay a while. Shade when the sun is overhead. Shelter when clouds roll in. A tidy spot for the grill and a heater so evenings feel comfortable.

He chose a Baltic motorised wall mounted louvre roof aluminium pergola and built the rest of the space around it.

What changed

  • The pergola attaches to the house, so there are no posts blocking the edge by the wall.

  • The motorised louvres open for light and close for shelter, giving simple, instant control.

  • A dark aluminium frame ties in with the decking and furniture for a clean, modern look.

  • On one side, a privacy panel softens wind and screens the kitchen area.

  • Toby added a BBQ bench and heater wall, so the space works day and night.

Result: an outdoor lounge that reads like an extension of the house, not a temporary cover.

Why wall mounted worked here

  • Use more of the deck. With the beam fixed to the house, you gain usable floor area and a clear walkway along the facade.

  • A visual connection. The pergola ceiling lines continue the roofline, so it feels like one continuous living zone.

  • Services are simpler. Power for the motor and heater can run back to the house neatly, out of sight.

A quick word on the build

Toby installed it himself over a couple of days.

"Pretty easy installation. It was just my wife and I and we managed to install it within a couple of days. We added a BBQ and heater wall and love the look of it."

Every site is different. If you plan a wall mounted pergola, make sure the fixing surface is solid and level, and always follow the installation guide for anchors, spacings, and load paths. If you are unsure, get a qualified installer to check the substrate and connections.

How it feels to use

  • Morning coffee with the roof angled to let in soft light.

  • Lunch prep at the BBQ bench with the privacy panel blocking the breeze.

  • Evenings by the heater with the louvres closed, the space warm and calm.

It is the place guests head to first, and the last spot people leave.
