Matthew’s Two Charcoal Pergolas for the Deck and BBQ Area

Matthew had two different spots in his backyard that needed cover: a wide timber deck attached to the house and a separate outdoor kitchen area. He used two matching charcoal Tasman motorised pergolas to provide shade and rain protection across both.

The 6 x 4 m deck coverage

The first pergola is a 6 x 4 m unit mounted to the house. It is positioned in the L-junction of the home, providing a dry spot right outside the sliding doors.

To keep the walkway as clear as possible, we used a custom support bracket attached to the house soffit instead of a standard vertical post on the inner corner. This "post-less" corner keeps the deck floor open and removes a potential obstruction from the middle of the transition area between the two wings of the house.

The sheltered outdoor kitchen

The second pergola was built over the separate BBQ and prep bench area. This unit is integrated into the concrete walls, which act as a windbreak and a privacy screen for the cooking zone.

The motorised louvres are particularly helpful in a kitchen area; they can be angled to let BBQ smoke and heat escape while still providing shade, or closed completely if it starts to rain.

Nighttime functionality

Both pergolas are fitted with integrated LED strip lighting. This ensures that the cooking and dining areas remain well-lit and usable long after sunset. The charcoal finish provides a consistent look that matches the house roofline and the dark fencing in the backyard.

Thinking about a custom layout for your deck? If you have a corner that needs shade but a standard post would get in the way, a custom bracket setup could be the solution. Share a photo of your deck and we can discuss the options for your layout.
